The Bird Inside

By Tim Leones, grade 7
Written during the 2023 Winter Poetry Workshop

Learning how to balance
And ride a bike
Is like a baby bird
Learning how to fly
I plant my feet
I push off
Crash, Topple
Like a baby bird
Who flaps its wings
But couldn’t fly.
The thought of my friends
Having fun without me
Flashes through my mind
But I must wait and learn.
I try and try again.
Crash, Topple, I go
Innumerable times
As the sun sets
Along with my hope
I try for the last time.
I did it!
As I succeeded
The baby bird inside
Took to the sky.
